Happy New Year!
OK, a bit east of us it is 2013 already, our turn comes in two hours. Most other people need to wait a bit longer, but trust me, this is inevitable, so just let me wish you a happy new year 2013 - and try to make it better than the previous one.

Fascinating

Fascinating

Many (most?) religions are excluding each other, even calling the competition "evil". But it seems there is one even bigger threat to them, and that is humanism. Against this "enemy", even different religions are able to unite.

So, if any religion wants to show clearly how little the human being is worth to them, now is the chance: All you need to do is join this alliance...

Guns do not kill people - right

Guns do not kill people - right

You are absolutely right, guns do not kill people. But, as George Carlin said, they are incredibly helpful on that job. Without a gun, it might take some time and effort to slaughter 26 people in a row. I found that guns are not really helpful for household cleaning, repairs, food preparation, transport etc, but for killing living beings they are the number one tool!

But let us be realistic and instead extend the ban on surprise eggs for a few more years. After all, everyone knows the statistics showing how many children died of those dangerous things...

Collection of Christmas Music suggestions

Collection of Christmas Music suggestions

I think I should have chosen the above title the first time I posted this, probably not too many people will have noticed that the title itself was a song name...

Have yourself a merry little Christmas

OK, Christmas is approaching, and even I start listening to Christmas music. I do not know what you listen to or like, but here are a few songs that are playing around here these days. Be warned though, this is not just one genre.

Let us start with a classic, Drummer Boy. There is a very famous version with Bing Crosby and a rather young David Bowie:
Bing Crosby & David Bowie - The Little Drummer Boy / Peace On Earth

One interesting thing about Chirstmas songs is that many diferent people performed them - in different ways. This is the same song, by Die Toten Hosen (though here performing as Die Roten Rosen):
The LIttle Drummer Boy(Die Toten Hosen)

This is from an album Die Toten Hosen (DTH) published under the name Die Roten Rosen. Just go to Youtube, search for that name, enjoy. They performed a number of covers, but also wrote their own songs. This one (Frohes Fest) is my favourite from that album - but only if you understand German will you understand why this song is so powerful:
Die Toten Hosen: Frohes Fest

Talking of covers, they did (among others) cover Slade:
Die Roten Rosen-Merry X-Mas Everybody

I think it is a bit more powerful than the original:
Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody - OFFICIAL VIDEO
Can you hear the difference between Punk Rock and Glam Rock?

And now for something completely different, Doris Day singing Winter Wonderland:
Winter Wonderland by Doris Day

Of course I also have this song in the Eurythmics version:
Eurythmics - Winter Wonderland

Let us continue with that tempo and the Pogues and their Fairytale of New York:
The Pogues Featuring Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York (Official Video))

Another rather silent song comes from Chris de Burgh:
Chris de Burgh - A Spaceman Came Travelling

And I think it is almost impossible to not know this one from Chris Rea:
Chris Rea : Driving Home For Christmas

I have a few more soft/slow Christmas songs, but let us move to slightly faster rythms, with some Rolling Rock from Shakin Stevens:
Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone

If you liked that you will like this one too, from Gary Glitter (Yes, I know what he did later and I am not happy about it.):
Gary Glitter - Another Rock 'n' Roll Christmas

I do not think that Christmas should be every day, because it would be rather boring then, but Wizzard thinks so:
Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday

There is a Christmas album compiled entirely of punk rock songs, under the title (not surprising) "Punk Rock Christmas". (Another good one is A Santa Clause.) One of the songs (and my favourite on that album) is Deck the Halls by Zebrahead:
Zebrahead - Deck the Halls (I Hate Christmas)

And now for something quite different. I do not get along very well with Heavy Metal, in my opinion most of it is just loud, but lacking melody and good lyrics, things I can find in Punk Rock - which I also think has much more power. But anyway, there is a Christmas album (Twisted Christmas) published by Twisted Sister that I like quite a bit. This is their version of 12 days of Christmas:
Twisted Sister - Heavy Metal Christmas

One reason I l;ike this album is probably that they worked very similarly to DTH, creating their versions of Christmas classics:
Twisted Sister - Oh Come All Ye Faithful

Of course, they too saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus:
Twisted Sister - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

So, these are some of the songs in my Christmas playlist, I hope you might like the one or other. If you have more suggestions, just post them in the comments, I am always open for good music.

Communities - divide and quieten...?

Communities - divide and quieten...?

Had I joined all the communities that I was invited to so far, I would now be member in about half as many communities as I have circles - and I think I have a few.

So, some traffic will definitely go into communities instead of the regular stream. More communities means more stream traffic gone, Plus, in my stream I will see things that I may not have been looking for, but may be glad to stumble upon. Those things will now disappear into their respective communities. (Or would you post everything twice?)

While communities are all new and shiny, I am not sure whether this has been very well thought through. At least I personally will rather wait and see how this develops, also for the very simple reason that following traffic in communities takes additional time, and I am not a full-time poster...

Hmm, when I joined I was informed that I will be notified about everything that is written in this community, there is only an on/off toggle. I am a bit concerned that this may become slightly annoying over time...

TAKE CARE OF YOUR EYES WHILE USING PC

During a recent visit to an optician, one of my friend was told of an exercise for the eyes by a specialist doctor that he termed as 20-20-20. It is apt for all of us, who spend long hours at our desks
, looking at the computer screen.

I Thought I'd share it with you.

20-20-20

Step I :-

After every 20 minutes of looking into the computer screen, turn your head and try to look at any object placed at least 20 feet away. This changes the focal length of your eyes, a must-do for the tired eyes.

Step II :-

Try and blink your eyes for 20 times in succession, to moisten them.

Step III :-

Time permitting of course, one should walk 20 paces after every 20 minutes of sitting in one particular posture. Helps blood circulation for the entire body.

Circulate among all if you care. They say that your eyes are mirrors of your soul, so do take care of them, they are priceless.

8kg Gingerbread

8kg Gingerbread

Christmas is approaching, so today I was busy preparing gingerbread. Living in Taiwan, I can not go to the supermarket and buy some, so for quite a few years I have been baking my own, following a more traditional recipe - which means I need to bake at least one month before Christmas, because this gingerbread will be hard after baking and slowly soften.

Almost everything needs to be done from the basics, including making a gingerbread powder mix from herbs. These I get at a Chinese pharmacy btw, supermarkets here do not carry them. And potassium carbonate I have to get from a chemical supplies dealer...

If you wonder what I do with so much gingerbread: Most of it will be given away to a lot of people. I hand out small Christmas presents at work, have friends come for Christmas lunch (this year twice) and of course want to eat some of it myself. Btw, this gingerbread will not become hard and dry when exposed to air, it becomes soft and can even here be kept for up to a year.

Tasering children

Tasering children
It has happened before, and as sad as it is I am sure it will happen again. Why were tasers introduced? To allow police to use non-lethal force in situations where a lethal force would not be necessary? Some people seem to have got the logic wrong and now use tasers every time they think they can not get away with using their gun:

This is a relatively unknown artillery battery in the Jiayi city park, one of the secret (ooops...) counter measures Taiwan has prepared in case of invasions.

I could have sworn there was a descriptive text somewhere near them, but at least today none could be found. At least the calligraphic masterpiece seems to come from Fujian in China, but that is all I can say about them.
