This article drips of sarcasm, but is a very sad thing at the same time because it shows how quickly we are willing to throw democratic achievements over board and go back to being savages.

She was in charge and she could do what she liked. If she was going to have a big, big war then she might – only might – get round to getting parliamentary approval, but for the odd bombing raid she wasn’t going to go through the hassle of asking permission.

Ouch.

Ouch... If this is confirmed to be true, that there was no gas at all, I wonder what the reactions will be. I don't expect consequences, bombing countries based on rumours is en vogue if done by the right countries. Another news in my stream said Jeremy Corbin got attacked by Labour MPs for suggesting to wait for clarification before acting on Syria, going gung ho seems popular even with the opposition in the UK.

So, I'm only curious about reactions, consequences will simply not exist. Oh, and I wonder how the stories continue of those Syrian refugees from Douma who allegedly praised Trump. This article does not speak well about the "moderate rebels" who were driven (indeed, in buses) away.

Is curing patients a sustainable business model? Apparently not:

While this proposition carries tremendous value for patients and society, it could represent a challenge for genome medicine developers looking for sustained cash flow.

In other words: It may be nice for people when they get cured, but we make less money that way.

Railway time: I visited a roundhouse last weekend, an active one even, in Changhua, in the middle of Taiwan. There was no entrance fee, but visitors had to register at the guard booth.

Unfortunately, the roundhouse itself was not open to visitors. There were two steam locomotives inside which I would have loved to see closer, but no way.

The emergency shower in the battery charger room was evidence that the batteries were still of the lead-acid type, no surprise there. Other than our high-speed rail, most regular rolling stock is rather "mature". I wonder how often they bend tracks up as a cheap buffer.

If you want to visit the place, it is right next to Changhua station, actively serving the rolling stock there.

A bouquet plate of potato roses is the result of today's kitchen activity with students.

A bouquet plate of potato roses is the result of today's kitchen activity with students. Only three students registered, probably because most had no idea what I was talking about in the announcement.

The finished roses were also very welcome in the department office, so I guess it wasn't the last time we did this.

You don't want to be divisive? But you are! You are supporting discrimination by extremists. Those people are called "Ultra-Orthodox" for a reason. Ultra=extreme. And you support them, allow them to divide the population into members more or less worth based on their gender.

While this article has Jeremy Corbin in its headline, it deals with UK politics in general and reminds us of how a government in a democracy should behave.

There was a joke in the US after 9/11: a trucker with 11 US flags on his truck says to a trucker with nine US flags on his truck "Why don't you go back to your Al-Queda pals?" Lack of patriotism is a stint no politician wants on him/herself. Patriotism, the unquestioned loyalty to a local group, whatever they do.

It's interesting that patriotism is so important for many politicians, especially when they are otherwise rambling about globalization and the "global village" - while their own village extends only so far as their voters live. Everyone outside is either of no interest or even considered an enemy.

So Jeremy Corbin did something very strange: He followed a basic principle of a democracy and asked to wait for evidence before jumping to conclusions and accusing anyone or even acting. The UK government did the opposite. While Theresa May tried to phrase her statements in a way that would keep her from being held responsible, Boris Johnson was less subtle. Will he have to step back? I doubt it.

When the UK government asked other countries to show solidarity by expelling Russian diplomats, France also remembered the principle of innocent until proven guilty and asked for more evidence. Germany didn't. If you can't follow the basic principles you allegedly are so proud of, the principles that distinguish you from the "bad guys" - dictatorships, autocracies - how much better than the bad guys are you then?

More Easter eggs

More Easter eggs

We went to a nearby highschool on Friday. Some of our graduate students are teaching there German in a German club. For Easter they wanted to do an activity and also show an authentic German around, so 60 eggs, everything necessary to change their colour and I went with them.

I noticed that also our graduate students have received my musical influence, the background music selection could have been taken from my music library... (Yes, I am evil...)
