OK, the tree is up. I kept the lowest layer free of decorations for two reasons: Garfield and Gigi. Empirical studies last year showed a significant increase in lifetime for decorations above the first level. I hope the studies will be confirmed this year.

Your observations are funny! I got a bare tree decoration to use this year and put it atop a table in the living room. Dog and cat proof, I hope. Well... maybe not cat proof. But too skinny for the cat to climb.Your tree looks great to me - like an old-fashioned Christmas tree.
cobalt please thanks! I never really had to worry about Nimrod doing something to the tree, but the tigers were there from the moment I started to unpack. So far no new casualties, fingers crossed...
Our cat would climb up to the second tier of branches and spread himself for a nap when he wasn't amusing himself by swatting at the decor. It got so that in later years we were putting up the tree for him!
Grace Monte de Ramos mine haven't done that - yet.
