Reminds me of a line in one of John Varley's stories, I don't remember which. Protagonists are sitting on a bench in an outer solar system colony, Pluto iirc, and one of them exclaims at the sight of a local passing by, what was that!?. The other explains: Glowing testicles, it's supposed to be the most direct way to signal that you are sterile.
