Oh sweet memories... We did this in the early 90s, because sound cards were rather expensive while often not providing satisfying sound. Also, some notebooks didn't have any soundcard built in.
A R2R network fed by a mod player (Does anyone still know MOD files? Yes, I am that old.) was a pretty good solution back then.
