The headline is misleading, Germany has no problem with Russian gas, the US has. Not even Ukraine has a problem with Russian gas, only with the absence of it:
Ukraine ... fears the new pipeline will allow Moscow to cut it out of the lucrative and strategically crucial gas transit business.
That is exactly the core issue and Ukraine may blame themselves for it. They didn't pay their debt, siphoned off gas and even cut off the gas supply to Europe. With an immature player like Ukraine in-between, it's no wonder a literal "workaround" was sought:
