When they hear "German sausage", a lot of people will imagine a person in short leather pants (Lederhosen) and a small hat on the head, holding a huge glass of beer in one and some kind of hard sausage in the other hand. That image is slightly incorrect.
One of the many kinds of sausage in Germany is liverwurst (Leberwurst), which is soft and can be spread like butter. There is however not just one liverwurst, there are dozens of different flavours - and Germans usually eat them in rather civilized ways, like here for breakfast on a bread roll.
