New clone batch

New clone batch

Powdered sugar with lemon juice makes for relatively good minion glasses, but I really need a different "chocolate" dough, this one deosn't handle well at this scale.

This time the minions got a tan, so I have to reduce the temperature again. Anyway: Gru, I'm coming.

Today the kitchen, tomorrow - the world!

Today the kitchen, tomorrow - the world!

I am in the process of cloning my own minions. It is a very crude process at this early stage and it will take some more time before I can conquer the world.

The body is cookie dough, the trousers marzipan. Glasses and hair are the same cookie dough, just with cocoa added.

The marzipan is too dry, need to add some water. The cocoa dough also needs some more reworking, it breaks too easily apart at that size.

The glasses are still rather unsolved, but next time I might beat up some egg white - or use powdered sugar with lemon juice.

Well, excuse me, the world awaits my domination, I got much to do.

Not exactly pretty, but very rare, as Germans use to say.

What do you do when you want to write a song, but can't come up with lyrics? Just recite some exotic names: places, people, or simply companies...

And with that I better hit the mattress...

I'm going to break a promise now - one more post related to the world cup. One of the more famous football clubs in Berlin (the German capital one) is the 1. FC Union. Since currently their stadium is not much in use they rented it out to their fans, who can bring their armchair or sofa and then all watch the world cup together.

That's why there is a stadium full of sofas now in Berlin...

Impossible Dream

Images like the one here are buzzing around the internet, along with breathless articles talking about NASA’s design for a warp drive starship.  Just so we’re clear, NASA is not working on a warp drive ship. What they have done is thrown some spare change toward researching what is sometimes referred to as an Alcubierre drive, named after Miguel Alcubierre, who published an article in Classical and Quantum Gravity on a kind of warp drive. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the paper was a way of testing the theoretical edge of general relativity. One of the big downsides of the Alcubierre drive is that it would require large quantities of something with negative mass, for which there are no real known candidates.

I have no problem with tossing a little money at wild ideas.  It is the scientific equivalent of buying a lottery ticket. The odds are long, but the payoff would be huge. But at the risk of sounding like a curmudgeon, this kind of hyped, glossy display grinds my gears, particularly when its supposed goal is to inspire the next generation of STEM students. We don’t need hype to inspire STEM students. The reality of modern science is cool enough without the hype.

Just look at what we are doing right now. We have a probe on its way to Pluto. We have another one that will land on Ceres.  We have rovers on Mars. We have a global array of radio telescopes. We have a space station. We have satellites discovering planets around distant stars. That’s just in the field of astrophysics. We’re developing materials on a molecular level, manufacturing organs, creating self-driving cars, building robotic limbs that restore real functionality to amputees.  That’s not the future. It’s happening right now as you’re reading this.

If you’re a young person interested in STEM, and you work hard toward your dream, these are not the things you’ll be working on.  They are the things you will study in college.  The things you’ll work on will be much cooler.

Imagine working on a project to mine asteroids, or mapping a billon stars in our galaxy, or using the next generation of space telescopes to study the atmospheres of possibly habitable exoplanets. Imagine going to the Moon, or even Mars.  Those are dreams you can make real. Science is a noble profession. It is worth pursuing if it is what drives you, and it can be deeply rewarding.

But don’t buy into the hype.

Is it football time again?

Is it football time again? If you are tired of watching a few highly-paid lawn comedians do their show, why don't you watch a few animated characters perform a much more exciting match?

If you are in a hurry, the actual match starts at 02:45.

Almost forgot I had taken this: No, there is no baby exchange going on here, this is just a retractable board for changing your baby's diapers. Nothing special so far, no.

The interesting part starts with the location at which I took the photo: A men's restroom. It was at IKEA (but the basement parking lot, not the store), but still this is the first time I noticed such a facility in a men's restroom here in Taiwan. Surprise...

In case you are curious, the Chinese text says you can get diapers at the service desk on the first floor.
