#GooglePhotos reminded me that two years ago I was at a park with my new housemates Garfield and Gigi. Only now can I somehow imagine how malnourished they must have been when their mom dropped them at my door, they look very different now.

The carrying case has long since retired, not even one of them would fit in now.

Nearly every day there are reports about how Russian officials/hackers are alleged to have meddled in US elections or politics in general. But even if all is true, it looks like they did not use anything that hadn't been in place and did nothing that hadn't been done for years or decades. In short, they would have simply opened the door that someone put into the wall earlier.

Russians hacked election machines? (Don't you dare calling them computers! People might notice what they are!) And who insisted on using them in the first place? Who insisted on not leaving a paper trail? Who insisted that they must not be audited? Russians? It's a pity the US cannot afford democracy, like having ballots counted or holding elections on Sundays for a change.

So, Russians may have bought or at least financially supported Donald Trump. Were they really the only ones? I seem to have noticed a growing number of US business leaders in political positions. I don't think they are of Russian descent. Plus, just read the linked article. US policies are for sale, and a lot of money is on the table.

Of course, investors expect a return on their investments. To them, even the current "healthcare" bill is "insufficiently conservative", meaning not enough people may die due to it. By the way, did you ever hear reports of those "Russians" pressing to repeal "Obamacare" or demanding tax cuts for the rich? No? Me neither...

Moderate rebels, fundamentalists - where is the difference?

Moderate rebels, fundamentalists - where is the difference?

I had seen videos of fighting in Syria before and had noticed how the "moderate rebels" would loudly praise their god each time they hit something. Recently, while trying to find out the model of an AA gun I came across this video.

According to Wikipedia and other sources, Sham Legion are "really, really moderate" compared to other "rebel" groups. This video is a self representation. Taking away the logo display it is shorter than a minute. Yet in that time the man behind the camera (I didn't include the others) praised his god 16 (sixteen) times, which results in less than four seconds between two praises.

So if this is the frequency at which "moderate" Islamists have to praise their god, how often would fundamentalists do that? Can anyone provide a video?

And why do I wonder if those people would allow non-followers to live among them...

Jason ON, the video you posted recently was apparently not over the top, not even when that trigger-happy fearful cop shot a black colleague, because that just happened. The reason is (surprise!), that the white cop feared for his safety.

Another German fellow, this one both shorter and older than me. Pittiplatsch appeared on a children's TV program in 1962 for the first time and has since then been a favorite of German children.

He lives with Schnatterinchen, a duck, and Moppi, a dog. As a goblin, he is always up for shenanigans, but generally means well. On Christmas he usually travels home to goblin land to see his family.

I had thought it would be easier to buy one on his 55th birthday, which happened these days, but I had to order him online.

When they hear "German sausage", a lot of people will imagine a person in short leather pants (Lederhosen) and a small hat on the head, holding a huge glass of beer in one and some kind of hard sausage in the other hand. That image is slightly incorrect.

One of the many kinds of sausage in Germany is liverwurst (Leberwurst), which is soft and can be spread like butter. There is however not just one liverwurst, there are dozens of different flavours - and Germans usually eat them in rather civilized ways, like here for breakfast on a bread roll.

And now the last item on my to-do list for Berlin can be checked: Thuringian roasted sausage (or Thuringian bratwurst).

There are always two or three people near the fountain by the world time clock on Alexanderplatz carrying all the necessary equipment in some kind of vendor's tray. They may not put it down, for that they would need a stall permission.

This does not just taste good, it is also the cheapest snack in the vicinity, costing just 1.50 Euro.

Germany is famous for its sausages, even though most people have no idea just how many kinds there are.

Germany is famous for its sausages, even though most people have no idea just how many kinds there are. Berlin is usually associated with two kinds: Bockwurst, a sausage that is boiled and then eaten with mustard, and Currywurst, which does indeed mean curry sausage, although the curry is only sprinkled over the ketchup.

The most famous curry sausage can be found at Konnopke, near U2 (the subway line, not the band) station Bernauer Strasse. (Don't go there on weekends...) This was one of the items on my to-do list for this visit. The last is Thuringian bratwurst on Alexander square...

You know you are in Germany when the airport doesn't offer free water, to encourage you to pay instead. And you know that things must have gone bad when instead of the machines offering coffee, tea and cocoa for free at the gates you only find pay coffee.

This is Frankfurt airport, where two years ago I still enjoyed a free hot cocoa while waiting for my connect flight at six in the morning. That is gone. Two years ago I didn't need to go through body scanners, now they are installed at all security checks.

Could it be that the body scanners were so expensive that cuts had to be made elsewhere?

Oh Taiwan... This is an ad for an English language cram school for children. In Chinese there is a regular term for the English language, 英語, but also one specifically for American English, 美語.

As you can see the latter is used here, Hanlin (the first two big characters, the school name) advertises specifically teaching the US flavour of English. But this is the first time I see the maple leaf in this context. Accident or...?

There is by the way no similar term for Canadian or Australian English, those need more than two characters to express.

Yes, that new carrier has a weapon so secret we are publishing it on the internet! By the way, this catapult must be the carrier's new secret weapon. Why? Because "the aircraft accelerates the catapult"! This is an aircraft carrier only on the surface, in truth it is a catapult carrier, flinging catapults at the enemy: Catapultam habeo...

But it is a great carrier: It "can generate 13,800 volts of electrical power"! That's "more than three times the 4,160 volts the Nimitz-class carriers could generate"! I wonder if the author would suffer a stroke if someone told him a lot of people can generate way more at home...

Well, it was a good laugh, thanks for that...

Amateur Radio Fieldday!

Amateur Radio Fieldday!

This weekend some of us are again camping in BV7AU's hangar, doing a last equipment test for the VHF QSO Party next weekend.

The weather is not exactly on our side: There is a lot of rain in the form of short showers coming without any warning. The shortest may be over in 30 seconds, but still leaves anyone who was not under cover dripping wet.

I only did one contact with Japan, southern tip of Honshu, on 50Mhz. For non-hams: That is a distance of 1600km, using what once had been the lowest TV frequencies, so it was not too bad, but also not overwhelming.
