Interesting: I think I can start a baking club, the last few weeks I have basically had the same students (only minor variations) coming to my Thursday baking activity. When we finished today, they asked directly "And what can we do next week?"

Today we played with bread rolls. Yes, played: We made dough from three different kinds of flour and after the first batch to show them the differences they got "creative" with the second batch (the first photo).

And yes, the chopsticks... She said the bread was too hot to hold in her hand. Welcome to Taiwan...

What could possibly go wrong? Has ever anything gone wrong because risky trades were made easier? Impossible!

Btw, dear Fed, you called for a simplification of the rule, not the softening that you do now. I know, easy to get confused, both words start with the same letter. Good to see qualified professionals on those posts...

There are a few trees in the park that seem to be blooming recently. Some carry relatively large red leaves/petals, others have tiny yellow ones. They are dropping continuously, at a pretty high audible rate. Cleaning the paths doesn't make sense now...

This is Taiwan: This elevator, designed for a load of 1000kg, is expected to carry 15 people.

The numbers are "slightly" different in Europe and I wonder what they look like in the US...

This should be done more often, way more often.

This should be done more often, way more often. This semester I'm giving a course about German foreign policy and my students notice quite often that in a YouTube clip a certain question was asked, but a politician (or spokesperson) never answers it and instead talks about other things. If politicians cannot answer questions and instead want to waste our time, take them off air or at least tell them very clearly that they are wasting everyone's time.

Spaetzle

Spaetzle

Today we made a kind of noodle coming from the people who have to put "le" at the end of each noun - Swabians. These are very easy to make (the noodles, not the Swabians) in terms of both materials and equipment - forget the "Spaetzle sieve", you don't need one.

Spaetzle can easily be varied, for example with cheese (Kaesespaetzle), which we still had. I really can't understand why some people objected to the sauce I prepared, I merely added a single chili pepper...

Our department is still recovering from a weekend of competitions, but luckily this year's Rhine Cup (Rheinpokal) is over. We did not win the whole cup (That was Wenzao - congratulations!), but I'm proud of our students winning singing and country knowledge. Maybe we can even improve on table tennis until next year. And we should start looking for a suitable song for next year...

Thanks to all participants who traveled all the way to Taiwan's South - and found once again confirmed that both weather and food is better than in the North.

The article is pretty vague, but it sounds as if the Great UK reinvented the wheel AC motor, but tries to package it as something brand-new.

Is that correct or does someone have information on why this should indeed be an incredible new design?

Silence Hectic before the storm

Silence Hectic before the storm

Tomorrow our department will host the Rhine Cup, a Taiwan-wide German language contest. Don't worry, only seven universities and colleges here have dedicated German language departments, so we don't need to expect half the population. Still, amazing how many people will travel for a cup of river water.

After I was tasked with creating questions for the country quiz (Some of them are slightly evil - muahahaha!) I was also designated as judge for that quiz, probably because nobody else could handle my evil questions. I'm sure at least that part will be fun - for me at least...

Originally I only wanted to make some "Kalter Hund" (hedgehog slice in English) with students, but since our department is hosting a countrywide German language contest this weekend I thought we make a few more. We ended up making seven, each 33cm long, so about 2.3m cake in total.

Then our department head asked if we had time to make some apple crumb cake - for the weekend, of course. The students this time were almost the same group of first-year students as last week, so "No problem!" We also made two apple crumb cakes.

I don't know how our students will perform this weekend, but I know we will eat well.

There's a lot of growling coming from Nimrod recently, because Gigi started to prefer his bowl over her own. Until some time ago Nimrod would have driven anyone doing that away with a sharp bark, but although he's really not amused, he just stands there and does a strange mix of growling and howling...

I'm not sure if this works better in Win10 now, but I have some doubt. There is a computer in my office, running Windows 7. My predecessor in this office didn't speak (and even less read) Chinese, so the university managed somehow to get a Traditional Chinese Windows converted to German.

That conversion is however far from perfect and a real pain compared with any Unix/Linux/OS X machine. There are still spots where Chinese shows up and when I installed a new version of LibreOffice, the installer chose Traditional Chinese for the installation.

This is now so messed up that the offline tax software that I tried to install is all gibberish during installation and apparently does not even install correctly - another great side effect.
