Aaaarrrrggghhhh, finally the Trinket gets recognised on OS X. Too many possible failure sources on the way - and the solution was of the headbanging kind:
I don't have USB 3.0 ports, which are mentioned as problematic ("Put it on a 2.0 port!"), but still I had to put a USB hub inbetween to get the Trinket recognised correctly. So if you have the same problem ("AVRdude can't find USBtinyISP..."), give a USB hub a try, it could save you some grey hair.
