We are currently celebrating Chinese New Year and it is custom to give not presents but money, in red envelopes. For small children, money does not mean very much, so this time I found a currency that my daughter should know to appreciate: a fried cookie imprinted as NTD10000. (The highest real denomination was 2000, now 1000)

MICHAEL STEWART oh dear... Here people go to Taiwan Bank ATMs to get brand-new bills (like those 100 in the photo), because that is the bank issuing new money.
